Tell us a bit about yourself and how you started your brand
Made By Coco is a South African brand born in my kitchen in October 2014.
It all began when I was on a mission to formulate products with ingredients
in their most natural state, in an effort to soothe my daughter’s eczema and
to help prevent stretch marks during my second pregnancy. I realised that
all products available in the market didn’t have the natural properties that I
was looking for.
Did you do any research?
Yes, I spent a lot of time researching. I even acquired an online diploma
to broaden my knowledge and skills. My approach to researching is more
practical than theoretical.
How your calling as a sangoma came about?
Growing up I used to see things in my dreams. Fortunately, my family was
supportive of the things that I would share with them.
Did you encounter any challenges?
I’ll be the first to admit that since I began formulating, it has not been smooth
sailing. When I began making my product I had no real idea of what I was doing.
I just knew that I was being guided by a premonition.
How is it like being a sangoma in South Africa?
I feel being a sangoma in South Africa is taken for granted. With the work
that I do, I can act as a psychologist, a doctor, and be many other things
to different people.
What makes your line of business unique
What sets us apart from our competitors is that we deliver a premium product.
And our product is accessible to consumers. We have capitalised on an online
platform to make it easy for consumers to purchase our product
What was the first platform that you used to offer your services online?
I created a blog using a drag and drop website. That’s what taught me how to
design a website. From my online business, I can provide people with online
bone throwing reading. I can also do it on Skype with an international client.
What’s your marketing strategy
We realised early on that location is crucial. That’s why we are now working with
some retailers that can stock our product. Our distribution channels include
pharmacies, online channels, and independent distributors.
What are some of the lessons that you have learned?
In order to become successful, you need someone in your lineage to open
doors for you. Once you get that right, it’s like you open up a big truckload
of blessings for many generations to come. The results of umsamo are
unpronounceabl where as the second lesson is to be able to be self-sufficient
because if you can’t provide for your own needs you can’t provide the world
